Theory of change

By equipping hospitals with the IMPALA system we enable continuous monitoring, real-time alerts, and clinical decision support. This supports health workers to detect deterioration earlier and act in time. Which shifts care from reactive to proactive, reducing preventable maternal and neonatal deaths while improving efficiency and lowering costs, ultimately strengthening health system performance in under-resourced settings. For an overcrowded hospital like Kenyatta, this can be a game-changer in providing higher quality care.

Life-saving care for newborns and mothers in Kenya

IMPALA-Uzazi is a flagship implementation project at Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya’s largest national referral and teaching hospital. The project expands the hospital’s initial investment in 10 IMPALA monitors to a 40-monitor neonatal monitoring system, combined with training, implementation support, monitoring, and evaluation. This will allow multiple neonatal wards to be structurally monitored and create a central clinical monitoring environment. The project also includes preparation for whole-ward monitoring and a later expansion into maternal care. It matters because high patient volumes, staff shortages, and limited reliable equipment currently make timely recognition of deterioration too difficult for many newborns who need urgent care.

Impact

The project aims to:

  • Support monitoring in 100+ neonatal beds

  • Train 100+ healthcare workers

  • Improve monitoring for thousands (4000+) of newborns annually

  • Help save an estimated 120–180 additional children’s lives per year
