Theory of change

If we train government health workers (Lafiya Sisters), procure modern contraceptives (DMPA-SC), and collect health data, then we can provide comprehensive community-based services. These inputs lead to increased knowledge about family planning, improved access to skilled providers, and direct availability of contraceptives. Women make informed decisions, take up effective family planning, and use it consistently. This behavioral shift results in fewer unintended pregnancies, fewer unsafe abortions and better-spaced births, resulting in reduced maternal mortality.

Comprehensive community-driven family planning services

We deliver community-driven family planning services. At the core of our approach is the “Lafiya Sisters” model, which trains government-employed health workers to deliver family planning counselling and services directly within communities. This hyper-localised approach builds trust, improves access, and generates real-time data to help the government predict how many contraceptives to buy. Crucially, the Lafiya model meets women where they are, with a trusted member of their own community.

Impact

In total, 861,040 women have been reached with contraceptive services in 2026. Alphatron Foundation's support allows us to further test and scale the model, so 10,000+ additional women in rural Nigeria have been reached.
